Every Profession Needs an Accountant – ICAG CEO

E.O. Osae FCA urges university students to embrace financial literacy, integrity and strategic thinking. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG), E.O. Osae, FCA, has urged university students to look beyond the traditional perception of accountancy as a profession primarily concerned with numbers and bookkeeping, emphasising its critical role in business, governance and national development.

He said the modern Chartered Accountant had evolved into a strategic business partner whose expertise was essential to effective decision-making, risk management, accountability and sustainable organisational growth.

Addressing students at the Grand Finale of the 8th Tertiary Business Sense Challenge (TBSC) in Accra, the ICAG CEO stressed the importance of financial literacy to professionals across all disciplines.

“Every profession needs an accountant,” he said, explaining that financial literacy was an essential component of professional development, irrespective of an individual’s chosen career.

Accountancy Beyond Numbers

The CEO said accountancy was not simply about recording transactions or preparing financial statements but also about trust, integrity, governance, strategy, risk management and sound decision-making.

He described the modern Chartered Accountant as a business adviser, strategist, risk expert and trusted decision-making partner, capable of contributing meaningfully to organisations across virtually every sector of the economy.

According to him, the changing business environment required accountants to combine technical competence with strategic thinking, ethical leadership, technological awareness and an understanding of the broader economic and business environment.

He therefore encouraged students to consider Chartered Accountancy as a dynamic profession offering opportunities to influence businesses, institutions and public policy.

Financial Literacy for Every Profession

The ICAG CEO emphasised that financial literacy should not be regarded as the exclusive domain of accountants.

He noted that professionals such as medical doctors, lawyers, engineers, entrepreneurs and technologists routinely made decisions with financial and commercial implications.

“Whether you become a medical doctor, lawyer, engineer, entrepreneur, technologist or pursue any other profession, you will make decisions that have financial implications. Understanding financial information and making informed financial decisions will therefore be critical to your success,” he said.

He urged students to develop a sound understanding of basic financial concepts and principles, regardless of their academic discipline.

Integrity and Trust at the Core

The CEO further highlighted the importance of integrity, ethics and trust in the accountancy profession and in the wider business environment.

He said accountants had a critical responsibility to promote transparency, accountability and good governance, noting that reliable financial information and ethical professional conduct were fundamental to building confidence in organisations and institutions.

He encouraged students to appreciate that professional excellence went beyond academic qualifications and technical competence.

“Competence without integrity cannot provide sustainable leadership,” he said, urging students to cultivate strong ethical values alongside their academic and professional capabilities.

Creating Early Pathways into the Profession

The CEO disclosed that , ICAG was strengthening and expanding the ICAG Students’ Association (ICAGSA) across tertiary institutions as part of the Institute’s strategy to engage young people at an early stage of their professional development.

He said the initiative would provide students with opportunities to connect with Chartered Accountants and gain access to mentorship, professional networking, career guidance and professional development.

He encouraged students to take advantage of ICAGSA and other initiatives designed to expose them to the accountancy profession and help them make informed career choices.

Preparing Tomorrow’s Leaders Today

The CEO further stressed that university education should prepare young people not only to acquire academic qualifications but also to apply knowledge, solve real-world problems, navigate the workplace and provide effective leadership.

He encouraged students to complement their academic studies with skills in critical thinking, communication, teamwork, problem-solving, leadership and ethical decision-making.

“These are the competencies that will distinguish tomorrow’s leaders in an increasingly complex and competitive global economy,” he said.

UCC Wins 8th TBSC

The CEO’s address came at the conclusion of the 8th Tertiary Business Sense Challenge, where the University of Cape Coast (UCC) emerged champion after an impressive performance at the Grand Finale.

UCC finished ahead of the University of Ghana (UG) and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to claim the top position in the competition.

The TBSC, organised by Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) in partnership with ICAG, has become an important platform for promoting business knowledge, critical thinking, teamwork and healthy intellectual competition among students from tertiary institutions across Ghana.

Building a Pipeline of Future Professionals

The event brought together the President of ICAG, Mr. Augustine Addo, FCA, members of the ICAG Council, Management and staff, representatives of the Ministry of Education, tertiary institutions, sponsors and partners, media representatives and students.

The successful conclusion of the 8th TBSC reinforced ICAG’s commitment to investing in young people, promoting the accountancy profession and developing a strong pipeline of ethical, competent and forward-looking professionals and business leaders for Ghana.

ICAG reaffirmed its commitment to working with GCGL, tertiary institutions and other stakeholders to strengthen initiatives that expose young people to business, finance and professional development and equip them with the knowledge, skills and values required to contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s socio-economic development.
